Brugge in Blue – Bruges, Belgium

A beautiful blue hour reflected in the picturesque canals of Bruges, a medieval town frozen in time.

Brugge (pronounced ‘Broo-jh, a Dutch word, and also spelt as Bruges) is about an hour or so from the big city of and capital of Belgium, Brussels. We caught a train in, which runs fairly frequently through the day and relatively easy to find and board.

Apart from the town square, there are no iconic, defining landmarks or structures. Instead, the charm lies in the town as a whole – spending an entire day exploring the cobblestone streets and canals is easy, as is stuffing your face full of Belgian chocolate along the way.

In hindsight, staying the night in Brugge instead of catching a train back to Brussels afterwards may have been a better idea – sunset was approximately 9:50PM, with the blue hour you see here peaking at around 10:15PM. Needless to say, we got back to the hotel quite late!

This image is a combination of 3 exposures, taken approximately 30 minutes apart on a locked down tripod; 1 for the sky, 1 for the building lights, and 1 very underexposed frame, which was used to prevent highlight ‘blowouts’ on some of the brighter artificial lights in the scene.
