Kalinihta Santorini – Oia, Greek Islands

A once-in-a-lifetime sunset washes immense colours over the fairytale cliffside houses of Oia, Santorini.

Have you ever had a moment where you saw something so stunning for the first time, or got caught hugely by surprise at you were seeing in front of you? Well, this was certainly one of them!

Donald Yip Santorini Sunset

Santorini has always been a bucket list destination for me (and I’m sure it is for a lot of others too), so I booked myself in for 6 days to explore and photograph this lovely island, not wanting to miss anything. Funnily enough, this spectacular sunset happened on my very first evening there! After photographing this, all I could think was “OK, what do I do now for the next 5 days??”. But there was more than enough of this beautiful island to explore during my time there, including a stunning hike to the next towns, Imerovigli and Fira. The shot is taken from the popular million-dollar-view lookout point at the old Byzantine Castle ruins.

If you plan on shooting from here or this area, here are some tips:
– You need to get here early (at least 1 hour before sunset) and stake out your spot. Even when I was there in the shoulder season (start of May), it was very, very busy. I don’t blame them all however, the view is well deserved of this attention!
– It can get crazy windy up there sometimes. If your tripod is lightweight, make sure you bring something to weigh it down, like a plastic bag filled with stuff

After you watch the sunset, be sure to grab a delicious gyros or two from the popular Pitogyros shop near the bus carpark (as I did on a daily basis).
